Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen

 

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Our reading from Cranmer’s fourth homily considers the example of Abraham

This faith made Abraham ready, at God's commandment, to offer his own son and heir Isaac, whom he loved so well, and by whom he was promised to have a innumerable issue among whom one should be born in whom all nations should be blessed; trusting so much in God, that though he were slain, yet God was able by his omnipotent power to raise him from death and perform his promise. He mistrusted not the promise of God, although under his reason everything would seem contrary. He truly believed that God would not forsake him in scarcity and famine that was in the country, and in all other dangers that he was brought unto he trusted ever that God would be his God, and his protector and defender whatever he saw to the contrary.

So our bible reading today is from Hebrews chapter 11, beginning at verse 17

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, ¹⁸ of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” ¹⁹ He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. ²⁰ By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. ²¹ By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. ²² By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Collects for today

O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Final Words

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen

And so we begin with Confession

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Grant to your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Today we continue in Cranmer’s fourth homily, where we read

How plentiful this faith is of good works, and how it makes the works of one man more acceptable to God from those of another.  St Paul teaches at large in the eleventh chapter of the letter to the Hebrews saying that faith made the oblation of Abel better than the oblation of Cain. This made Noah build the ark. This made Abraham forsake his country and all his friends, and go unto a far country, there to dwell among strangers. So also did Isaac and Jacob depend, or hang, only on the help and trust that they had in God. And when they came to the country which God promised them, they built no cities, towns, nor houses, but lived like strangers in tents, that might everyday be removed. Their trust was so much in God, that they set but little by any worldly thing because God had prepared for them better dwelling places in heaven, of his own foundation and building.

Thus, today’s bible reading is from Hebrews chapter 11, beginning at verse 1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. ² For by it the people of old received their commendation. ³ By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

⁴ By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. ⁵ By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. ⁶ And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. ⁷ By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Amen.

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Final Words

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Cranmer’s fourth homily looks to the Church Fathers for wisdom

You have heard the first part of this sermon, that there be two kinds of faith  - a dead, and unfruitful faith and a faith lively that works by charity. The first is unprofitable, the second necessary for the obtaining of our salvation. The faith that has charity always joined to it and is fruitful brings forth all good works.  Now, concerning the same matters, hear what follows:

The wise man says, “He that believes in God will listen to his commands.” For if we do not show ourselves faithful in our conversation, the faith which we pretend to have is but a false faith, because the true Christian faith is manifestly showed by good living, and not by words only. As Saint Augustine says, “Good living cannot be separated from true faith which works by love”. And St Chrysostom says, “Faith of itself is full of good works - as soon as a man does believe he shall be garnished with them”.

Accordingly, our bible reading is from Proverbs Chapter 2, beginning at verse 1

My son, if you receive my words
    and treasure up my commandments with you,
² making your ear attentive to wisdom
    and inclining your heart to understanding;
³ yes, if you call out for insight
    and raise your voice for understanding,
⁴ if you seek it like silver
    and search for it as for hidden treasures,
⁵ then you will understand the fear of the Lord
    and find the knowledge of God.

Final Words

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

And so we continue reading from Cranmer’s fourth homily,

This true faith will reveal itself, and cannot long be idle, for as it is written, “The just man does live by his faith”. He neither sleeps nor is idle, when he should wake, can be well occupied. And God by his prophet Jeremiah says, “But he is a happy and blessed man who has faith and confidence in God. For he is like a tree set by the water side. That spreads his roots abroad towards the moisture, and fears not heat when it comes; his leaf will be green and will not cease to bring forth his fruit.”  In the same way, faithful men, putting away all fear of adversity, will show forth the fruit of their good works as occasion is offered to do them.

Which is why we turn now to Habakkuk chapter 2, beginning at verse 1

I will take my stand at my watchpost
    and station myself on the tower,
and look out to see what he will say to me,
    and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

² And the Lord answered me:

“Write the vision;
    make it plain on tablets,
    so he may run who reads it.
³ For still the vision awaits its appointed time;
    it hastens to the end—it will not lie.
If it seems slow, wait for it;
    it will surely come; it will not delay.

⁴ “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,
    but the righteous shall live by his faith.

Amen.

Final Words

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip us with everything good that we may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made, and you forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

 

Today’s extract from Cranmer’s fourth homily continues to describe that to which a true and lively faith clings

And that we have our Saviour Christ, our perpetual advocate and priest, in whose merits, oblation and suffering we do trust that our offences be continually washed and purged, whenever we, repenting truly, return to Him with our whole heart, steadfastly determining with ourselves through His grace to obey and serve Him in keeping His commandments, and never to turn back again to sin. Such is the true faith that the Scripture does so much commend, which, when it sees and considers what God has done for us, is also moved, through continual assistance of the Spirit of God, to serve and please Him, to keep His favour, to fear his displeasure, to continue his obedient children showing thankfulness again by observing or keeping His commandments, and that freely chiefly because of true love and not the dread of punishment or love of temporal reward, considering how clearly without our deserving, we have freely received His mercy and pardon.

Therefore our bible reading is from Romans chapter 8 beginning at verse 26

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. ²⁷ And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

Therefore, when men hear in Scripture so high commendations of faith - that it makes us able to please God, to live with God, and to be the children of God - if they then fantasise that they be set at liberty from doing all good works, and may live as they like, they trifle with God and deceive themselves. And it is a manifest token that they be far from having that true and lively faith, and also are far from knowledge of what true faith means. For the very sure and lively Christian faith is not only to believe all things of God which are contained in Holy Scripture but it is also an earnest trust and confidence in God, that He does regard us, and that He's careful over us as the Father is over the child whom He loves. And that He will be merciful unto us, for His only Son's sake.

So our bible reading today is from Deuteronomy chapter 32, beginning at verse 4

The Rock, his work is perfect,
    for all his ways are justice.
A God of faithfulness and without iniquity,
    just and upright is he.
⁵ They have dealt corruptly with him;
    they are no longer his children because they are blemished;
    they are a crooked and twisted generation.
⁶ Do you thus repay the Lord,
    you foolish and senseless people?
Is not he your father, who created you,
    who made you and established you?

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Our Father in heaven

Hallowed be your name

Your kingdom come

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven

Give us today our daily bread

The Collects for today

O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Final Words

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen

Thank you for joining us and we hope these timeless truths will strengthen you for whatever you face in the coming day.

And so we begin with Confession

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Grant to your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Today we continue in Cranmer’s fourth homily, where we read

Of this faith, three things are especially to be noted. First, that this faith does not lie dead in the heart, is lively and fruitful in bringing forth good works. Second, that without it can no good work be done that should be acceptable and pleasant to God.  Third, what manner of good works they be, that this faith does bring forth.

For the first. As the light cannot be hid, but will show forth itself at one place or another, so a true faith cannot be kept secret, but when occasion is offered, it will break out and show itself by good works. And as the living body of a man ever exercises such things as belong to a natural and living body for nourishment and preservation, as it has need, opportunity and occasion, so the soul that has a lively faith in it will be doing always some good work, which declare that it is living.

Thus, today’s bible reading is from 1 Timothy chapter 6, beginning at verse 17

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. ¹⁸ They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, ¹⁹ thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

And so we begin with Confession

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Cranmer’s fourth homily reminds us that faith is the basis of our assurance

And this faith is not without hope and trust in God, nor without the love of God and of our neighbours, nor without the fear of God, nor without the desire to hear God’s word, and to follow the same in rejecting evil and doing gladly all good works. This faith as St Paul describes it is the sure ground and foundation of the benefits which we ought to look for and trust to receive of God. A certificate, and sure assurance, although they do not yet appear to us. And after he says, “He that comes to God must believe both that he is, and that he's a merciful rewarder of well doers.”  And nothing commends good men unto God so much as this assured faith and trust in Him.

Accordingly, our bible reading is from Romans Chapter 8, beginning at verse 18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. ¹⁹ For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. ²⁰ For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope ²¹ that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. ²² For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. ²³ And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. ²⁴ For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? ²⁵ But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Final Words

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen
