Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

And so we conclude Cranmer’s sixth homily.

 To all we ought, as we may, do good. To those that be good, out of love encourage and cherish because they be good; and to those that be evil, out of love procure and seek their correction and due punishment that they may be thereby either be brought to goodness or at the least God and the community may be the less hurt and offended. And if we thus direct our life by Christian love and charity, then Christ does promise and assure us that he loves us, that we be the children of our heavenly father, reconciled to his favour , very members of Christ and that after this short time of this present and mortal life we shall have with him everlasting life in his everlasting kingdom of heaven. Therefore to him with the Father and the holy Ghost be all glory now and forever. Amen.

Therefore let us turn in the Bible to the third chapter of Titus beginning at verse 1

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.  But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,  he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,  whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,  so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Let us pray

Our Father in heaven

Hallowed be your name

Your kingdom come

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven

Give us today our daily bread

And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from the evil one

For the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever Amen

The Collects for today

Almighty God, you have not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities; grant that we, who for our evil deeds deserve to be punished, by the might of your grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Final Words

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip us with everything good that we may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Turning to Cranmer’s sixth homily we read

So it is declared to you what true charity or Christian love is – so plainly that no man be deceived.  Whosoever keeps this love, not only toward God, whom he is bound to love above all things, but also toward his neighbour, as well friend as foe, it shall surely keep him from all offence of God and just offense of man.  Therefore, bear well away this one short lesson – that by true Christian charity - God ought to be loved above all things, and all men ought to be loved, good and evil, friend and foe.

Our bible reading is from Luke chapter 10 beginning at verse 25

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

Amen.

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

So we continue reading from Cranmer’s sixth homily

And charity requires that such evil persons, those who are great offenders of God and of the community, to be cut off from the body of the community, lest they corrupt other good and honest persons – like a good surgeon cuts away a rotten and festering member for the love he has of the whole body – lest it infect the other members adjoining to it.

Our bible reading is from the first letter to the Corinthiand chapter 5 beginning at verse 9

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. ¹ But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.  For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?  God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

Amen.

Final Words

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Cranmer’s sixth homily warns us against ignoring sin

And such rebukes and punishments of them that offend must be done in due time, lest by delay the offenders fall headlong into all manner of mischief and not only be evil themselves but also hurt many men, drawing others by their evil example to sin and outrage after them.  As one thief may both rob many men, and also make many thieves, and one seditious person may allure many and even a whole town or country. 

So we turn to Luke Chapter 17 beginning at verse 1

And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

How do the authorities love misdoers?

Our reading from Cranmer’s sixth homily outlines the importance of discipline

The other purpose of charity is to rebuke, correct and punish vice without regard for status, wealth or power, and this is to be used only against evil men and malefactors or evildoers.  It is as good a purpose of charity to rebuke, punish and correct them that be evil, as it is to cherish and reward them that be good and harmless.  St Paul declares (when writing to the Romans) saying, “the authorities are ordained by God”, not to terrorise them that do well but unto malefactors draw the sword, “to take vengeance on they that have committed sins”.  And St Paul bids Timothy stoutly and earnestly to rebuke sin by the word of God.

So we turn with Cranmer to Romans Chapter 13 beginning at verse 1

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Turning to Cranmer’s sixth homily we read

To understand this better you need to understand that charity has two purposes – the one contrary to the other, and yet it is necessary to use both upon men of contrary sort and disposition.  The first purpose of charity is to cherish good and harmless men – not to oppress them with false accusations but to encourage them with rewards to do well and continue in well doing, defending them with the sword from their adversaries.  The role of bishops and pastors is to praise good men for well doing that they may continue in that way and to rebuke and correct by the word of God the offenses and crimes of all evil-disposed people.

“For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute justice one with another,  if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm,  then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever. “Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations?

O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hello and Welcome to “In All Our Doings”

Simply confession, Cranmer, a creed and collects. brought to you daily by Anglican Futures. 

Thank you for joining us and we hope these timeless truths will strengthen you for whatever you face in the coming day.

And so we begin with Confession

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

So we continue reading from Cranmer’s sixth homily

But here may rise a necessary question to be answered – if charity requires us to think speak and do well unto every man, both good and evil, how can magistrates execute justice upon malefactors (or evil doers) with charity?  How can they cast evil men in prison, take away their goods and sometimes their lives – if charity will not suffer them to do so? Here is a plain and brief answer: that plagues and punishments be not evil of themselves, if they protect the innocent.  And to an evil man they are both good and necessary and may be executed according to charity and with charity should be executed. 

Our bible reading is from Proverbs chapter 21 beginning at verse 13

Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor
    will himself call out and not be answered. 

A gift in secret averts anger,
    and a concealed bribe, strong wrath.
When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous
    but terror to evildoers.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Let us pray

Our Father in Heaven

Hallowed be your name

Your kingdom come

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven

Give us today our daily bread

And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from the evil one

For the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever Amen

Today’s Collects

Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants; and, that we may receive what we ask, teach us by your Holy Spirit to ask only those things that are pleasing to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the same Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Forgiveness for the sake of God's love

But first, we begin with Confession

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen

 

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Cranmer’s sixth homily teaches us we can forgive others, not for their sake but for Christ’s.

If we will have of God forgiveness there is no other remedy but to forgive the offenses done unto us  - which be very small in comparison of our offenses done against God.  And if we consider that he who has offended us deserves not to be forgiven by us let us consider again that we much less deserve to be forgiven of God. Although our enemy deserves not to be forgiven for his own sake, yet we ought to forgive him for God’s love – considering how great and many benefits we have received of him without our deserts and that Christ has deserved of us that for his sake we should forgive them their trespasses committed against us. 

So we turn to Daniel chapter 9 beginning at verse 7

To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, those who are near and those who are far away, in all the lands to which you have driven them, because of the treachery that they have committed against you. ⁸ To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him ¹⁰ and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 

Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Final Words

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen
